Vacation!!

feetYes, boys n’ ghouls, its that time of the year again.  Time for your old pal Lexxx to get away from it all and go on a fabulous vacation!  I’m so lucky because I belong to a family that considers a week-long family vacation to be of utmost importance.  Each year we take off:  myself, my Tally, my 2 sisters, their husbands, my niece and my daddy, and take a trip to the most beautiful of all coastlines.  North Myrtle Beach, SC is quite possibly the most perfect vacation destination for a southern belle like me.  It has miles of wide, soft sandy beach, blue water, sunshine, monuments to redneck culture— it has it all.  Historically, this is also a great writing week for me.  I get totally relaxed and the floodgates open up.  If I don’t finish a great WIP, then I usually make good progress or start something new.  So I’m looking forward to that! Anyway, I thought I’d say a few words as to what will make it perfect for me.

Essentials for the perfect beach vacation:

1.  A fantastic book.  Or 10.  I always take a few books and my Nook with me to read on the beach.  Incidentally, the first Ellora’s Cave book I ever read was lying on North Myrtle Beach.

2.  A drink.  Traditionally, the week of my family vacation is the only time I really  indulge in the spirits.  Most of the time you’ll see me lying on the beach or sitting in the sun with a red solo cup in hand, imbibing something cold and fruity.

3.  A notebook and/or laptop.  I have to write.  Its some kind of imperative, so I’ll be sure to take some writing implements with me.

4.  A perfect swimsuit.  In case you haven’t seen my picture, I’m not Angelina.  I am not what one might call “bikini worthy.”  However, I’ve got it where it counts and I like to flaunt it.  This year I bought two amazing swimsuits that are perfectly pinup.  They look fantastic and I can’t wait to strut it out on the beach.  And as I always say, if you’re self-conscious about how you look in a swimsuit, follow this simple procedure.  A) Walk out on the beach and find the inevitable “speedo guy” with the back hair so thick he looks like he’s wearing a shirt.  B) Pitch your umbrella beside him.  Trust me… you’ll be the belle of the ball.

Alright, I’m off, kittens!  Don’t forget to miss me!  And if you need a scrumptious, sinful summer read, I think I can help you out. As always, click the link and discover something new!  Love yas!

Sizzling Excerpt: One Hundred Strokes

I hate that phrase, “domestic discipline.”  It sounds so… formal.  Or like some kind of government program.  At any rate, love it or hate it, I suppose that some would call my new release, “One Hundred Strokes,” an exercise in domestic discipline.  Though the couple in the story are not married, they are in a long-term, monogamous relationship.  Our heroine, Selene, is desperate to explore the darker, more adventurous side of her sexuality by tempting her lover with a little sensual spanking.  I decided I’d share a little excerpt with you guys today from the beginning of the book.  Here, Julian has discovered Selene’s fantasy and well…. to know more you’ll have to read for yourself….

“I didn’t mean that you don’t love me. It’s just that sometimes you put me off for work. I don’t feel…you know…like the center of attention. And sometimes being the center of attention is nice.”

“I see,” he replied. He said no more but continued brushing out Selene’s thick locks. Over and over he dragged the bristles through her hair, smoothing it until the gentle strokes lulled her into a relaxed state of contentment. After several moments, his voice broke the silence, jerking Selene from her reverie. “You know, some might say that a need to be the center of attention all the time is selfish and rude.” Selene glanced into the mirror, seeing that his mouth was quirked into a playful smile. “Very unbecoming of a lady.”

“I’ve never thought of myself as a proper lady. You know that,” she replied, returning his smile with a spark of mischief in her eyes. “You of all people should know that.”

“Despite my tutelage.” He pulled back, standing up and tossing the hairbrush onto the bed. She started to follow, but Julian laid a heavy hand on her shoulder, pushing her back onto the seat. “Stay here. I have something I want to show you.”

Gee… I wonder what he wants to show her.  And is it bigger than a baby’s arm??  To find out, you gotta buy the book.  So CLICK the image above and it will rocket you right on over to the Ellora’s Cave website where you can pick up this delectable little treat for just $1.49.  And after you read it, come on back over and leave me a comment.  You may just find one of my backlist in your email….

The Muse Who Loved Me

So I’m trying to do better with this whole blog thing.  I know… I’ve said that before, but this time I really mean it.  I realize that I need to get me smilingmy voice out there and just be loud and obnoxious.  So here goes nothin’…   Somebody please kick my ass when I fall off after a few days.

I decided to talk a teensy bit tonight about muses. All artists have them, whether they’re writers, musicians, visual artists or actors.  We all use something or someone to glean inspiration from.  As a romance writer, I’ve often felt that an appropriate muse is one of the most important things you can have.  It always helps me to have a picture in my mind of my characters.  Of course, this is also what makes me impossible to please with cover art.  So tonight, a little tour through my Rogues’ Gallery of muses.

TallyFirst off, I’m going to show you this man.  He’s a constant muse and has been in every single book I’ve ever written.  My long-suffering husband, author and best friend, Tally Johnson.  He drives me insane, but I’m sure the feeling is mutual.  Even though he NEVER reads my books (says they make him feel funny… wtf?!), he’s always encouraging.  His creamy southern accent is an inspiration for the voice of all those southern gothic characters I create.  He’s got the best set of big brown eyes and an old-fashioned charm that just makes me swoon. But best of all, he’s the muse I get to sleep with every night.

Razor-sharp wit.  If you’ll notice, every one of my heroes is extremely sharp.  Clever, sarcastic charming and calculating are Sexy Ugly: Benedict Cumberbatchsome of the features that I find most tantalizing.  You will never see an idiot take his clothes off in an Alexandra Christian novel.  It just won’t happen.  I like them smart and sexy.  So one of my favorite muses lately has been none other than Benedict Cumberbatch.  All I have to do is take one look at those ice cold eyes, the sneer of that heart shaped mouth and that low purr of his voice and the story practically writes itself.

The muse that started it all.  I’ve told this story a million times, but I owe a lot of my writing ewan-mcgregor-kurt-cobain-movie-1-17-07career and many of my relationships to this muse.  Waaaaayyyy back in 2001, I was in that awkward period just after college when I was trying to find my place in the adult world.  I  was letting go of some destructive friendships and was feeling pretty lonely at that point.  That summer, I saw the incredible movie, Moulin Rouge, with my older sisters and immediately fell in love with Ewan McGregor.  I went total fangirl.  And who says that’s good for nothing?  I joined some yahoo groups (remember those?!) and met some other fangirls and of course… I began… *hangs head in shame* writing fan fiction.  It taught me so much about how to build a story AND got me addicted to writing for other people to read and getting feedback.  A lot of the things that I learned about writing, I learned from writing fan fiction.  I also made three of the best friends a girl could ever hope for in the process.  So Ewan remains in the upper echelon of my favorite muses.

OK, this blog post has now reached maximum density.  I could continue, as I have lots of muses, both male and female, but that would just bore you.  Besides…. I’m supposed to be pimping my new book, “One Hundred Strokes.”  And just what muse is responsible for Julian?  Well… I guess you’ll have to read the book and find out….

Fun and Fetishes with Lexxx

Greetings, faithful readers!  I’m back once again, coming to you from the very hot, wet South.  It’s been a long, hot summer so far but I can assure you that I’ve been busy.  AND you’ll be seeing lots more of me in the coming weeks as I crawl out of obscurity to promote my newest release from Ellora’s Cave— “One Hundred Strokes.”  It’s the first in a series of short things I’ve been writing about fetishes.  Now don’t think “oh yay, another book about whips and chains.  It’s much better than that!  I decided that I wanted to do some stories about fetishes that aren’t so common.  In case you didn’t know,  fetish can be any object or action that habitually incites a sexual response.  Whips, chains and latex are just the tip of the iceberg.

In “One Hundred Strokes” I wanted to explore one of my favorite fetishes: spanking.  Before the question comes to my inbox– you know the question:  “So Lexxx, do you get your ideas based on your own fetishes?”, let me go ahead and clear up the rumors:  sometimes.  Spanking IS on my menu of adult play.  I’m a receiver, not a giver.  There.  The elephant in the room is out.  But I don’t always write about my own fetishes.  I enjoy creating characters that are nothing like me, but of course there will always be something of myself lurking under the surface.  Anywho, so “One Hundred Strokes” is the story of a couple, Julian and Selene, whose relationship has gotten pretty stale.  Through an accident, Julian manages to discover that his girl has a little kink that he didn’t know about.

It was very important to me to show a loving couple engaging in fetish play.  I’ve heard so many people talk about guilt and embarrassment when it comes to discussing what they like in bed.  It’s as if they think the Sex Police are going to break down their door and carry them off to jail.  Selene and Julian are successful, regular folk who need some spice.  Just like the rest of us.

So go check it out.  Read it with your mate.  Read it by yourself.  Read it to the dog.  Just go forth and read.  And stay tuned over the next few weeks for more blogs on this subject as I pimp the book all over the place.
