New Releases and Promo and Menage…oh my!

In case you haven’t heard, I have yet another book released!  I’m so overwhelmed. Never would I have imagined that I would have been able to produce so much work in such a short amount of time.  I began September with the release of “Sanguine Kiss,” my first sexy vampire novella.  As far as I know it’s done pretty well and I even have a couple of nice reviews on Amazon.  Then before you can say, “Help! Its sparkly!” my new book, “Three To Tango” releases with Mocha Memoirs Press.  This book is near and dear to my heart because not only is it my first with Mocha Memoirs, BUT it’s also my first foray into m/m erotica.  My two sexy male vampires, Leo and Andre, are bisexuals that have been lovers for nearly a century.  They seduce our heroine and a good time is had by all.  They also manage to kick off a series that I hope will keep you all panting for  months to come.

That’s right, I said a SERIES.  “Three to Tango” is the pilot episode of a series entitled “Strange Bedfellows.” All of the stories in this series center around The Oubliette, kind of a singles bar for paranormal creatures.  Want to hook up with a non-sparkly vampire?  How about the ghost of your dead lover?  Or do you prefer to have a hair-raising tryst with a werewolf?  Anything your twisted little heart desires can be had at The Oubliette.  If you know who to talk to…

“…vampires can be dangerous to your health.”

A truer statement had never been uttered, but when Cali stumbled upon The Oubliette, she began to realize the wisdom in those words. Broken-hearted and bored, Cali’s life had become a string of TV dinners and romance novels. She wondered where her life was going until she followed the mysterious stranger through the red door and entered a world that few would ever know existed. A world of vampires, werewolves and pleasure beyond imagination. Within the walls of The Oubliette, Cali will embark on a dangerous and sensual journey of discovery that will change her life forever.

Also, in the works this week we’ve got some promotional goodies that I’d love to see you all take part in.  Coming up on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd, I’ll be a featured author on D. Renee Bagby Presents First Chapters.  You’ll get to sample the first chapters of three different Alexandra Christian specials, including the steamy, new “Sanguine Kiss.”  I’ll also be hosting a chat over at the Mocha Memoirs Press Cafe yahoo group. I’ll be over there talking about “Three to Tango” along with lots of other MMP writers.  We’ll be discussing our books, what inspires us and in honor of Halloween, our love of all things horrific.  That’s right– it’ll be a DARK Mocha day.  I’d love for any of you readers and writers out there to join us.

This has been an incredibly long blog post, but I hope I’ve given you some stuff to consider.  Don’t forget to come play with me this week!

Thursday Thirteen #2: Dollface

Hey kids!  I decided to share 13 sentences from my backlist today.

Dollface” is the story of Caroline, a plain Jane, small town Southern girl who just happens to be a funeral home cosmetian. Everyone in town likes Caroline,
though they’ve always felt that there was something not quite right about her.
For years Caroline has pined in silence for the funeral director’s son, Scott
Bauer. Scott has always been kind, but never returned her affections. Her world
comes tumbling down when she discovers that Scott is to be married and will
leave her forever. She can’t let that happen and will go to unnatural lengths to
keep him.

********************************

“Alright, Mrs. Marshall, this won’t hurt a bit,” Caroline said as she began scraping the fine grained sandpaper over the scarring on her forehead.  “Just a little smoothing to make the foundation go on easier.”  She always talked to them—her clients, as she liked to think of them.  It made her feel better about it andmaybe it would help them on their way to resting in peace.  “You wouldn’t believe all the people in town who are just devastated over your passing.  People really loved you, you know.”  It was true.  Almost everyone in town knew Mrs. Marshall and thought very highly of her.  She leaned down and examined the wound closer before brushing away the dried skin that had flaked off.  “Almost,  Mr. Bauer did an excellent job with these sutures.  They shouldn’t be hard to cover at all.”  A few more passes with the sandpaper and Mrs. Marshall was done.    Caroline  rummaged through the collection of jars in her box until she found a small jar of modeling wax.  “A little of this should be just the thing.”  She smoothed a bit of the wax over the scar and began blending it with her fingertips until the scar was little more than a slight indentation.  “There now, good as new.”  Caroline stood back and admired her handiwork.  She’d managed to cover the bruising and remove most of the blood from Mrs. Marshall’s hair.

Did I mention it was a straight horror piece???  Oh… sorry. For the really creepy stuff, you’ll have to buy the book.  Just $2.99 on Amazon and Barnes and Noble !

I’m a Southerner, NOT a Freak

I just saw something on Facebook that has made me snap. So pardon me, but I’m going to have to go a little Julia Sugarbaker on y’all.

I am a Southerner. I drink iced tea, fry chicken just like my momma used to, have a big and loud family, wear flip-flops in the winter and even I even wave to strangers on the street. I’m also a seven-time published author, former teacher, college graduate and I can complete the crossword puzzle in the newspaper in ink. But apparently the people at The Learning Channel and their affiliates think that I’m some kind of adorable moron that should be paraded in front of the masses.

Lately, there has been an explosion of “southern-fried” reality shows on TV. “Hillbilly Handfishing,” “Lizard Lick Towing,” “My Redneck Vacation,” and the now-infamous “Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo” are just drops in the proverbial pond. I admit that I find Ronnie, Amy and Bobbie on “Lizard Lick” amusing. They’re like folks that I would know. And though they get up to some interesting antics, they do show some intelligence and savvy with their chosen profession. But come on, people. Is this how you really think Southerners are?  Many of us are articulate, well-educated folks that go to a real job every day.  Most of us don’t make up names for our friends and family like Nub, Bubba, or Huggy Bear.  Most of us aren’t trashy, toothless rednecks that live in broken down trailers.  I am personally offended by the stereotypes perpetraited (see… I even know some big words) upon viewers by the Honey Boo-Boos of the world.  And not just at TLC, but at the Southerners that have cashed in by appearing in these atrocities.  Have some pride and self-respect, please!

Bad form, TLC.

The Literary Underworld Blog Tour Presents: Jackie Gamber

I am pleased to be a blog stop on the Literary Underworld Blog Tour!  I have been doing conventions with these folks for a couple of years now and every time I meet one of their ranks, I’m impressed by the level of talent and creativity each one of them posesses.  I am honored to be able to host the fantastic Jackie Gamber today as she blogs about what exactly the Underworld is and of course… dragons.

**************

Hello from Memphis, and thank you so much to Lexxx for hosting me for the Literary Underworld blog tour! I love how Lexxx describes her family as The Munsters; that is one of my most beloved shows to this day, and Netflix has brought the opportunity to carry on the dark love of the show to my own kids. Technology is grand.

What is the Literary Underworld, you ask? Its a bookstore outside the box, allowing readers to purchase directly from authors. Cutting out the middle men helps authors make more per book than they would otherwise. And more than that, its a way for authors to join together and support each other by sharing the load, spreading the word, and making it happen! Its the reason I‘ve based my series of posts for the tour on the Beatles song.

I came to be a part of the Literary Underworld the way most people discover new things: through friends. Specifically, friends I made through MidSouthCon, a yearly convention in Memphis. There‘s nothing like sharing a crowded, noisy vendors room with fellow writers and genre entrepreneurs for great bonding.

As an author, my first love has always been science fiction, fantasy, horror, and the blends of those that make such interesting subgenres. I‘ve published stories as short as flash fiction, as novellas, and novel-length. My current work-in-progress is Book III of the Leland Dragon Series, a fantasy novel for Seventh Star Press, as well as a steampunk fantasy upcoming for New Babel Books. I‘m also a freelance editor. Releasing soon is the Scary Psyches issue I edited for Shroud Magazine.

But I think some of my favorite work has come from my awareness and outreach, related to my research and writing about dragons. In my work with FODERP (Friends of Dragon Equality and Rights Protection) I‘ve had wonderful opportunities to meet dragons across the globe, and to learn, and in turn, teach about these magnificent creatures. To CTRL stereotypes, to ALT knowledge, and to DEL specism. I‘ve spoken at conferences, conventions, and meetings for friends of dragons, as well as represented dragons for those who have never had the pleasure of meeting one. Its been an honor to be an ambassador for these magnificent, and so often misunderstood, creatures.

I‘d like to share with you today an excerpt from my presentation Dragonspotters’ Survival Guide, which includes handy tips on what to do when the unimaginable happens: stumbling into the path of a dragon in its natural habitat.

Even the most seasoned wanderer has occasionally come upon a napping, or otherwise preoccupied, dragon. Here‘s what to do if this happens to you.

  1. 1.      Don‘t panic. Remember the dragon is as startled as you are.
  2. 2.      Eye contact is important.  Dragons often judge the character of a person by the length he or she is able to maintain a gaze. The longer your gaze, the less of a threat you will appear to be.
  3. 3.      Empty all food items from your pockets and toss them toward the dragon‘s feet. The last thing you want at this point is for a stray candy bar to smack a timid dragon in the snout and undo the progress you‘ve thus far made.
  4. 4.      Finally, if after these steps the dragon has come to accept your presence, an introduction is in order. Courtesy and manners are always in fashion, and the dragon will respect you for them.

Sure-fire tips for turning a dragon stranger into a buddy!

Thursday Thirteen #1

So I’m going to try this Thursday Thirteen business.  This week I’ve chosen from my newest release, Sanguine Kiss.  It’s my first vampire novella and I must say, quite a sexy piece of business.  Enjoy!

*****

She sighed, her body tense as he came closer. But he could see it in her eyes—she could smell him. She wanted him, though she didn’t understand why. Already she was imagining his body pressed against her, driving her into his bed with the violent impetus of his thrusts. She could almost feel the bruises around her wrists when he held her down. Her mouth was dry and she kept chewing on her lip, all thoughts of her former lover clouded with the miasma of his masculinity.

“I offer no pity,” he said, brushing her hair away from her throat. “And no mercy.” He kissed her neck, just under her ear and let his lips linger there, brushing the soft skin with them. He wanted to relish every

layer of her flavor, from the salty sweetness of her skin to the spicy bitterness of her sex. Only when she was at the peak of arousal would he allow himself to submit to his hunger.

“Why are you doing this to me?” She leaned into the cradle of his arms almost involuntarily. “I don’t even know you,” she whispered, her cheek running against his.

Interview with a Vampire… No, not that one.

Joining me today at The Belle, I’ve got a most special guest.  That’s right, today I’m going to be talking to Seth, star of my new novella, “Sanguine Kiss.”

AC:  Welcome, Seth.  Thanks for agreeing to talk to us today.  Pardon the garlic garlands.  But we have to keep it safe, sane and consensual you know.

Seth:  Of course, Lexxx.  But you needn’t have worried.  The world is far more interesting with you in it.

AC:  (blushing) You’re such a charmer, Seth.

Seth:  (in a decidedly sarcastic tone) Vampire!

AC:  Indeed.  And speaking of that, tell us a little about your origins.

Seth:  Well, as hard as it might be to believe, I was born in 1341 B.C. in the city of Thebes.  I was a slave to a scribe named Kheti.  One day while I was gathering papyrus reeds by the river, a beautiful woman came upon me.  At first I thought she was the goddess Isis in human form, but her intentions were soon revealed.

AC:  I’m sure that was traumatic.

Seth: Indeed, but she claimed she could turn me to a living God.  Being stupid and young, I believed her.  And well… here I am.

AC:  I have to ask– were the two of you lovers?

Seth: (chuckles) For nearly a thousand years.  Off and on of course.  But as you know, now I have a new love.

AC:  Of course.  That lucky Gillian Thompson.  Why did you choose her for your mate after being alone so long?

Seth:  I don’t know if you realize, but the senses of a vampire are very keen.  Each of you has a distinct scent that is either pleasing or abhorrent.  There are subtle nuances that one can almost taste.  You, for example Ms. Christian, have an extremely spicy and sweet scent.  I would imagine that your blood tastes of cinnamon and chocolate.  Something about Gilly’s scent was so intoxicating.  It was as if her body called to mine.  I loved her in an instant and knew that I would no longer be satisfied without her.  And I suppose I enjoyed that someone needed me.

AC:  (cheeks in flames still over the chocolate remark) How do you feel about how vampires are portrayed in the media nowadays?

Seth:  Rather amusing.  I saw one of those Twilight movies with Gilly a few months ago and spent the whole thing thinking, “What sort of weed were these people smoking?”  A bloodless vampire movie.  It doesn’t surprise me.  Sexiness and allure is part of the vampire’s hunting practice and I’m sure that women find that very appealing.  The problem is, no one depicts what happens afterward.  Don’t get me wrong, I love women.  But there’s nothing I need more than blood.  And I’m sorry, I prefer it warm and directly from the source, if you get my drift (piercing stare that renders the Belle speechless for several moments).

AC: Well… it’s certainly been a pleasure, Seth.  I hope you’ll come back soon and give us some more insight.

Seth:  Anything for you, Lexxx.  I’ll come over and over if you like (eyebrows cocked in obvious innuendo).

(Wrapping a garland of garlic around herself like a feather boa.)  Thanks for joining the blog today, folks.  I certainly HOPE that I’ll be back tomorrow…

Happy Release Day to Me!

Well kids, it’s finally here! The release of my new novella, “Sanguine Kiss.”  I’m so excited about this one as it’s my first vampire book AND my first venture with Purple Sword Publications.  And not to toot my own horn or anything, but this is probably the hottest book I’ve written to date.  And those of you that have read my books in the past know that that’s saying a lot…

“Sanguine Kiss” follows the story of Gillian Thompson, a scorned lover who thinks she has no choice left but to end her life.  That is until the mysterious and arrogant Seth crosses her path.  He’s a lonely vampire that offers her a new life of exquisite pleasure, bloody kisses and sweet revenge.  This one will leave you panting, first with a rush of terror and later with a rush of hot blood to your naughty bits!  Don’t believe me, just read the excerpt….

************************

“Imagine it…slipping into eternal slumber in the safety of my arms.”

“No!” she shrieked, making a dive for the hallway. He was faster and before she knew what was happening, he’d grabbed her around the waist and thrown her against the wall, pinning her between him and the rough stone. His hands gripped the corner of her jaw, holding her head in place as he sniffed her like the animal he was. He growled and hissed, burying his nose in the crook of her throat and inhaling her musky scent. “Please don’t hurt me…” she whimpered.

“You think I want to kill you,” he said, his voice taking on a gravelly tone.

“But you’re…” She stopped, her voice trailing into another whimper as he kissed her throat. She couldn’t say it. The trembling and disbelief wouldn’t let her. “This can’t be real.”

“I can assure you, love. I am quite real.”

“Then you are…”

“A vampire?”

“Yes,” she whispered. “Are you?”

Seth smiled again, this time wide enough to confirm her suspicions. “Are you afraid?”

“No,” she lied, struggling to keep her breathing slow and even.

“Liar,” he replied, inhaling deeply as he nuzzled under her hair. “I can smell it on you like cheap perfume. It permeates every part of you and makes your blood a complicated ambrosia.” With that, he licked the outline of her jugular vein with the tip of his tongue then stopped, his lips lingering on the soft place just under the corner of her jawline and then sucking gently. “I can give you everything you’ve ever wanted and more. Answers to every question. Pleasure like you’ve never known.”

His words were the aphrodisiac she needed and she melted into his embrace. “Yes.” She sighed, succumbing to his seduction and offering her mouth to his. He kissed her deeply, his tongue delving into the moist cavern and drawing the breath from her body. He could feel her move against him, her body shuddering involuntarily. “Please…”

Seth broke away, growling deep in his throat as he swept her drunken, limp body into his arms. He carried her swiftly through the labyrinth of corridors and up the stairs, moving with an impossible speed that took her breath away. When they arrived at the end of the hall, he kicked the double doors, breaking the latch so that they flew open. Gillian flinched at the sound of the wood splintering as the doors hit the wall behind with enough force to leave a dent in the plaster. He tossed her unceremoniously onto his bed and stood back, watching her with a predatory glare.

“Are you going to kill me?” she whispered, sitting back on her elbows.

“Yes.” He watched as her chin began to tremble and she started moving backward slowly. “I’m afraid you’ve been chosen.”

“Please don’t.”

“So, you do want to live?”

She inhaled to say something but the words died on her lips, looking into his eyes. “I… I suppose,” she replied.

He came upon her, kneeling over her in an instant and making her draw back with fear of him. “You suppose? You must be sure! I offer you death, yes. But also life. Eternal life and you cannot change your mind once it’s begun!” He pulled her to him in a furious embrace that nearly stopped her breath. She cried out. He held onto her tightly, his mind racing with wonder. Why had he attached himself to this one so much? What was it about her that made him feel so…human? It had been a hundred years since he’d taken a companion and the last one had ended so badly—why should she be any different? But the thought of leaving her was nearly painful. “Let me give you something to live for,” he whispered.
